Does the fan run at every speed? Do the lights work independently? Is the problem a new noise, a control that does not respond or a fan that runs but seems less effective? Include the sequence and any recent cleaning or bulb change.

A working light does not diagnose the fan circuit, and a noisy fan does not by itself prove a failed motor. The assessment should relate the symptom to the specific hood and its controls.

Identify the hood and how it vents

Tell us whether it is an under-cabinet hood, wall canopy, island hood or an insert. Note whether it exhausts outdoors or recirculates, if known. A microwave above the stove has its own model and service requirements.

Share label details and accessible photos without removing an overhead assembly. Mention high mounting, custom cabinetry or other access constraints when arranging the visit.

Use the correct filter and lighting instructions

Follow the owner guide for accessible filter cleaning or replacement and the specified lamps. Filter type and cleaning method differ between ducted and recirculating designs. Some lights use replaceable bulbs; others use model-specific assemblies.

Do not wash a filter that the manufacturer specifies for replacement or fit a lamp solely because its base fits. Stop use if there is smoke, burning odor or an electrical fault, and leave wiring and motor work to qualified service.

Understand the repair finding

The diagnostic visit is $125. The full $125 is credited toward the final repair cost. The full repair cost is determined after diagnosis.

Ask whether the fault is within the hood or involves the surrounding installation. A repair quote should describe the affected components and required work. Do not assume that a fan repair includes alterations to the building’s exhaust system.

Keep the work record and follow the model’s care instructions after the repair. Report any recurring noise or control problem with the setting and circumstances.
