Gas Stove Igniter Repair: Clicking, No Spark and Next Steps

A suspected gas leak comes before troubleshooting

Do not try to find or stop a suspected leak, test another burner or wait for a repair appointment. Get everyone away from the area, make emergency calls from safety and stay out until responders say it is safe to return. The checks below concern ordinary operating or cleaning issues when there is no suspected leak or emergency. They are not a reason to stay inside investigating a gas smell.

Start with the surface burner, not an oven part

A surface-burner spark electrode and an oven ignition system are different assemblies. Record whether the problem affects a stovetop burner or the oven, and identify the full appliance model before looking for parts.

For the surface burner, describe what you already observed: no clicking, clicking without ignition, continued clicking with controls off, or a problem limited to one burner. Mention a recent spill, cleaning or power interruption. Do not repeatedly release gas to gather more observations.

On some models, several electrodes click when one burner is being lit. That alone does not identify a failure in all the igniters. The operating guide explains the normal behavior for your equipment.

Check the care instructions after a spill or wash

Once controls are off, the surface is cool and there is no suspected gas leak, review the owner guide for normal cleaning and cap placement. Burner caps can be different sizes and must go back on the correct bases in the specified position.

Whirlpool’s clicking guidance identifies moisture after cleaning and incorrectly seated caps as possible issues on covered ranges. This supports checking ordinary care before assuming a replacement igniter is needed; it does not diagnose every model.

Use only the cleaning method described for your appliance. Do not enlarge burner ports, bend the electrode, probe wiring, remove gas connections or pull the range out to investigate. If the igniter appears damaged, leave the repair to a qualified technician.

A continuing fault needs diagnosis before parts

If clicking continues with controls off, a burner still will not light after permitted care, or a part is damaged, stop using the affected appliance and request service. Follow its manual for safe shutdown; do not improvise a temporary ignition or wiring bypass.

A technician may need to distinguish an electrode problem from wiring, switches, a spark module or another cause. Replacing the visible tip without establishing the cause can leave the original problem unresolved. A spark or a clicking sound alone is not proof of a complete successful repair.

Describe the pattern and ask about the repair

Provide the model, affected burner position, whether other burners had worked normally, and whether the symptom began after cleaning. Photographs of accessible parts can help; there is no need to recreate a failure or expose internal wiring.
