A line through the cooking surface, a chip with broken edges or glass that has separated needs assessment before further use. Do not run another burner to see whether the damage gets worse, pour cleaner into the crack or press on it to test its depth.

A metal mark is not the same as broken glass

Take a photograph before cleaning if the damage is uncertain. Describe whether it appeared after a spill, dragging a pan or dropping an object. Do not run a fingernail over a sharp edge to judge whether the cooktop is safe.

Replacing the glass or replacing the appliance?

The full model number identifies the correct glass or cooktop assembly. A matching width or brand name alone is not enough. The technician also needs to establish whether the damage is confined to the surface and what other parts, seals or fittings the repair requires.

Ask for an itemized comparison: the specified assembly, labor, any related damage, availability and applicable warranty terms. For a built-in cooktop, include removal and installation requirements. For a range, distinguish a replacement top from replacing the whole range.

Keep small care problems from becoming damage

Follow the cookware recommendations for your appliance, lift pans rather than sliding them, and avoid storing heavy objects where they can fall onto the glass. Keep pan bottoms and the surface free of debris using the approved cleaning routine.

Spill instructions can differ by material and by model, particularly for sugary spills. Use the exact owner guide instead of a universal hot-surface cleaning rule. A persistent stain is a reason to check the care instructions, not to increase scraping pressure.

Send useful details without taking the cooktop apart

Have the model, a full-surface photo and a close-up of the damage ready. Explain which zone is affected and whether there is a separate heating or control problem. Photograph the label only if it is accessible without lifting the cooktop or moving the appliance.
