Over-the-range and built-in installations need different planning
For an over-the-range unit, include the cabinet arrangement and whether the existing vent exhausts outdoors or recirculates into the kitchen. For a built-in microwave, identify the specified trim kit and cabinet opening.
A countertop model should only be enclosed or mounted where its manufacturer permits that installation. Matching the width of the old microwave does not establish that the new unit has the same clearances or mounting requirements.
Keep the new brackets, templates and instructions
Save the supplied hardware and packaging until the installation is complete. An old mounting plate or trim kit may not fit the replacement. Tell us if the microwave is used or arrived without its installation pieces.
Whirlpool’s over-the-range instructions call for model-specific mounting and a supported lift. Arrange professional installation rather than trying to hold an overhead unit while removing its fasteners.
Discuss the venting and power supply in advance
The installation must follow the model’s electrical and ventilation requirements. Mention any planned cabinet changes, missing outlet or change from a range hood to a microwave. Additional preparation needs to be identified before assuming it is included in an appliance installation.
The mounting location also needs room for normal door movement and accessible controls. Photos taken from the floor can explain the setup; do not remove electrical covers or dismantle the microwave.
A malfunctioning microwave is a different request
If the current appliance sparks, smokes, has a damaged door or fails to heat, describe that fault when calling. Do not keep testing it or open its enclosure. Installation advice is not a guide to servicing internal microwave components.
