Dryer Not Heating: Electric and Gas Checks

Separate no heat from poor drying. Check cycle settings, understand electric and gas differences, and prepare useful details for a dryer repair visit.

Originally published · Updated

A turning drum does not prove the heating system has what it needs. Check the chosen cycle and describe when heat is absent before assuming a failed part.

Was heat expected at that point in the cycle?

Air-only settings intentionally run without heat, and a cool-down stage can leave the load cooler at the end. Read the selected cycle’s description and use what you observed during normal operation. Clothes that remain wet do not, by themselves, prove the heater failed.

If the drum does not turn, use our startup guide. A hot stationary drum needs the machine left off and qualified assessment. Do not keep restarting it to test the heater.

A conventional electric dryer can tumble without full heating power

GE explains that some conventional electric dryers can run with only part of the electrical supply while lacking the supply needed for heat. Working lights or drum movement therefore do not prove that the complete supply is correct.

Record any recent outage, installation or breaker trip. Do not use another household appliance to test a dryer outlet, fit an improvised adapter, open terminal covers or probe voltage. A repeated trip, hot plug or damaged connection requires qualified assessment, not repeated resetting.

The required supply depends on the appliance. Compact and heat-pump designs are not all covered by a conventional electric-dryer rule; use the exact model’s installation and owner instructions.

Gas dryers still use electrical controls and a motor

A gas dryer can tumble while its heating system fails to produce heat. Report whether the problem began after installation or a known supply interruption. Supply, ignition and control faults need to be distinguished before an igniter, valve or other part is ordered.

Do not open gas fittings, attempt manual ignition or bypass a safety device. If you smell gas or suspect a leak, leave without operating electrical switches or plugs, then call 911 and your gas supplier from safety. Return only when the responding professionals say it is safe.

Keep airflow trouble separate from a heater diagnosis

A dirty lint screen or restricted exhaust can impair drying even when heat is present. Whirlpool distinguishes these poor-drying conditions from a confirmed failure to heat. See warm clothes that stay damp and the vent-care guide.

A protective device may be part of the diagnosis, but its effect depends on the model and circuit. Replacing a thermal fuse without investigating why it opened can leave the underlying problem unresolved. Do not bypass it or treat a power reset as a repair.

What the diagnosis needs to establish

The technician needs the exact model and whether the symptom is no heat, intermittent heat or heat that stops before the load dries. Testing may involve supply, the heating system, controls, temperature sensing and protection, together with airflow conditions.

An error code or a visibly damaged part is useful evidence, but it does not automatically exclude other faults. Internal electrical and gas checks require the correct service information and qualified handling. A universal multimeter sequence cannot replace that diagnosis.

Ask what failed, what caused it and whether any installation or airflow work is also needed. Our repair-cost guide explains how to compare the estimate without confusing a part price with the complete job.

Bring the observations you already have

Have the model, dryer type, cycle selected, display message, drum behavior and relevant outage or vent-work history ready. If the washer left the clothes unusually wet, mention that too; extra starting moisture can look like poor heater performance.

Book online 24/7. Keep a faulty dryer off if it overheats, trips repeatedly, has a damaged connection or shows smoke. Ordinary accessible lint-screen care follows the manual; removing panels is not needed to prepare for a service visit.

Frequently asked questions

Why will an electric dryer spin but not heat?

The selected cycle, incomplete supply, heating components or controls can be involved. Drum movement alone does not establish that the full heating supply is available.

Does a clogged vent always mean the dryer has no heat?

No. An exhaust restriction can leave clothes damp while heat is present. It still needs attention, but it does not identify a failed heating element.

Does soaking-wet laundry prove the heating element failed?

No. The washer may have left more water in the load, and settings, airflow and other factors also affect drying.

Can I bypass a thermal fuse to test the dryer?

No. Keep the protective circuit intact and have the device and underlying fault assessed using the exact model’s service information.
